Specialized founder Mike Sinyard Talks Electric bikes

Dirt TV chats to Mike Sinyard about the Specialized Turbo Levo Electric bike out in Utah

At about the same money, and with the same faultless Stumpjumper geometry the Turbo Levo FSR 6Fattie houses a battery and motor driving up to 530 watts opening up a whole pile more riding in a shorter space of time.

More ground covered, faster. We’re talking quality time. Dirt went to Moab to find out more.

The Turbo Levo goes about its business effortlessly and quietly, very different to many electric bikes out there. The battery is integrated into the downtube, keeping the weight low, and is easily accessible. Two days in Moab, Utah really hammered home quickly our thoughts on this bike. Here’s a few of our initial thoughts before the full review drops….

  • It’s still a bike
  • There didn’t seem to be many people complaining
  • The fittest still rise to the top
  • Rock climbing on a bike is immense fun
  • Four days riding in two is no bad thing
  • You still get knackered
  • Adjustable power output is a great leveller on group rides
  • The Turbo Levo motor doesn’t ineterfere with descents
  • The power delivery is subtle
  • There’s no rattling battery
  • Its easy to be overwhelmed (or largely uninterested) by the potential to get whatever trail/power/distance measurement you want with add-on Mission Control
  • The simplicity of having no bar mounted power buttons
  • 3.0 tyres are a must have
  • Descending is fully planted
  • Great geometry still matters
  • That the Turbo Levo could well be more of a “Mountainbike” than traditional non-motor examples
  • It’s a fact on the ground so quit bleating

There’s some big words coming from Specialized’s Morgan Hill HQ too….”Add to this the powerful Mission Control App for full control of the Turbo technology and an integrated Trail Display with all of the ride metrics you need, and you’re looking at the future of trail bikes.”
