4. Bullet Bros ZZYZX Forks
4. Bullet Bros ZZYZX Forks
Getting rid of elastomer sprung forks was sadly only half the battle when it came to better suspension, and if you were into DH racing in the mid 90’s then you no doubt spunked far too much money on forks that by todays standards would barely even qualify as awful. There was one set of forks though that reached higher up the ‘shitometer’ than any others, and they were these Bullet Bros ZZYZX forks. They were supposedly meant to be a ‘bargain’ version of the ludicrously expensive Hanebrink forks, but at around a grand these still were still far from cheap. They were massive too, I’m sure they’d dwarf a set of 40’s. Anyway, if well serviced and used in a dust free dry environment they actually weren’t too bad for the time, but put them in real world conditions and you were screwed. It is genuinely no exaggeration to say that if you you took a freshly serviced set and tried to ride a DH run in the wet then within no more than 30 seconds your fork would magically transform from one with 6″ of travel to one with 2″ at best. Even vain attempts to bodge motocross fork boots on them did little to help matters. These forks were a true lost cause.
