2013 Dirt 100: Superstar Wheels

Just as with any Superstar product, you’ll have to look several times at that price to make sure you’ve read it right.

This all-mountain wheelset with Stans Flow rims costs only marginally more than the rims themselves, and yet the build quality is up there with the best of them. The Stans Flow rims really deserve a place of their own in the Dirt 100 as they’re nothing short of outstanding in both 26 and 29” guises.

They are as light as most XC offerings and yet they’ve even been used successfully on the World Cup DH circuit. Combine these rims with quality hubs and spokes and let a skilled wheel builder work their magic and you’ve got an amazing set of wheels…and that’s exactly what Superstar have done for less than £20 more than the rims alone cost!

Superstar offer a whole range of custom builds to suit every taste, but it’s these ones in particular that have always impressed us. Yes they might not be quite as sexy as a set of Mavic wheels but if budget is key then there is no better option.

Whats the story with the tech2 hubs, are they decent enough or do you need to change the bearings/freehub quite often? For the price, I could see myself buying a spare rear wheel, but should I pay more for their tesla hubs?

The tech2 hub are good although some find that the original bearings don’t last that long. The solution is just to replace them with some decent SKF ones and then you’ll be fine. The Tesla hubs are a bit nicer and come with high quality SKF bearings as standard. The choice is yours…

That really is a budget friendly offer! What is the weight on this Superstars build? I’m looking at the Shimano XT WH-M776 with straight-pull spokes and just over 2 kg for about £210… Any thoughts…?
