Winter Digging: Esher X

Rob Cole and the crew have been super busy with the spades and machines building a brand new bike park, Esher X, in North Surrey.

It’s being built on the site of the old “Esher Shore” freeride mountain bike park and will have four different tracks: Dual slalom track, Play track, Pump Track and Bike Test Track.

The Dual and Play tracks start on a huge roll-in tower with air-powered start gate allowing timed racing…Mr Bling will be holding a dual series there this year too.

Checkout Esher X for more info and we’ll bring you more news soon.

Lets just hope it doesn’t cost a tenner to ride there once it’s open, the old Esher Shore was a complete rip off and no wonder it didn’t survive. I’m all for this venue being a success, but anything more than £5 to ride for a day is taking the p…

well here’s the thing – Esher Shore ran very successfully for over 6 years until the North Shore / Freeride scene died away and people did not want to ride the timber planks anymore!

during its heyday we’d see over 100-150 riders a week, and the Summer Jams (we held 4) could attract 150 riders and 300 spectators

the old Esher Shore (a non-profit facility) actually cost £5 to ride all day with a year’s membership costing £20 including the first session, and discount in the on-site bike shop

£10 was a one-off riding fee for people who did not want the membership

when it cost £10,000 a year just to rent the land and insure the park you will understand why we had to charge these prices – then try adding in the huge expenditure on timber, wire, fixings, tools and 10000s of man hours (all voluntary)

if you thought it was a rip-off, try actually building a bike park yourself and trying to make it pay its way…
