IceBike 2010 Saracen & DT Highlights

For those of you who don’t know, IceBike is Madison’s yearly trade show and thanks to the massive amount of products that they distribute there’s always some good stuff to be found. So, here’s my pick of the crop from this year’s show…

We were very impressed when we got to have a spin on a prototype of this new Ariel bike from Saracen a few months ago, and now that we’ve seen the final production versions I think it’s fair to say we’re even more impressed. The quality of finish is superb, including the graphics, and the range starts at just £1599 for a bike that features Fox shocks front and rear…and that doesn’t mean cheap ones either, even the base model comes with an RP23 which makes it ripe for future upgrading.

If you’re wondering why the Ariel looks pretty bare graphically, that’s because each one comes with a set of ‘do it yourself’ stickers so that you can tailor it to your own tastes. Naked and stealth or loud and wild, it’s up to you.

If you didn’t already know, Saracen have signed Lance McDermott for 2010 and this is the very bike he’ll be riding. The frame is a standard aluminium Amplitude and it’ll be available with a slightly different build to that seen here for just £799.99. There will also be three Cr-Mo versions which start at just £359.99 and go up to £649.99.

Yeah this Kili Flyer might not be the most ‘Dirt’ bike in the world, but it’s pretty special nonetheless. Why? Cos if you’ve been around in this sport long enough that name is verging on legendary. In the early 90′s a Kili Flyer was the dream bike for many riders, and deservedly so. This latest incarnation (which won’t be available until much later in the year) is pretty special in its own right though because two of the models feature beautiful fillet brazed frames. I can’t think of any other company that’s offering a production frame like this, and in my eyes that’s a crying shame.

Oh yeah…and there will also be this equally beautiful titanium version!

Yeah this commuter/hack bike is even less ‘Dirt’, but we had to include it purely because of the wild graphics and…

its name! Unsurprisingly the person who named this bike had never met our Mike before they named it.

Finally, but by no means last are these two new forks from DT. Up until now their forks have really just been rebadged Pace forks, but for 2010 they’re all new. One of the biggest changes is the option of magnesium lowers (which are unbelievably stiff thanks to a unique arch design) which means that they’re now far more competitive when it comes to price, but the damping and air spring system has also been completely redesigned to offer better performance and user friendliness. There are a fair few different options to choose from with travel ranging from 120-150mm on these particular forks, but keep an eye out in the mag for more details as some should already be winging their way to us for testing…

That Ariel looks better all the time, got to get a demo.

No stickers on the frame? Brilliant, an excuse to fire up the vynil cutter :D

  3. Jim

I think these bikes look really good especially the downhill model from a previous post, the name of which escapes me. Looking forward to a future review.

  4. Gwion Wilias

I think it would be a better bike with 4inch wide tires you get more grip

  5. Tim

Nice one saracen. They’re all looking great. Love the plain frame, sticker it up yourself idea. More companies should do that.

  6. wildman

Clever Mike – cockney rhymin slaaang for BIKE.

    LOL

Has anyone checked out the weights for those DT forks yet on their website?
If they come out correct, holy Shite how light!!

  8. ed@dirt

Jim, i reckon those weights are correct cos they were unbelievably fricking light. We can’t wait to test them out cos on paper at least they look to be serious contenders.
