Dirt Office bits and pieces
October 13th, 2009 @ 11:09 AM
A big box from Fox HQ in California turned up at the Dirt office today. Among some other bits was a set of the new Fox 831 4x, dirt jump forks. I remember seeing Jared Graves and Dan Atherton with a pair of these bad boys at the World Champs in Canberra.
This is the first dirt jump/4x/dual slalom specific fork from the Fox mob and looks the business too. It runs a 15mm bolt-thru but there should be plenty of conversion kits around if you run a 20mm hub. They weighed in at 1723g on our office scales and word has it they’ll cost £749 and be available around December time just in time for Christmas and an expensive Christmas present at that. When we’ve had a thorough testing and hammering we’ll let you know if they are worth it.
Designed and engineered for the demanding disciplines of 4X, Dirt Jump, and Dual Slalom, the 831 uses the FOX
32 mm platform, FLOAT® Air Spring technology, and FIT RLC damper. The 831’s FIT RLC damper is specifically valved with firmer low- and high-speed compression damping to increase pedaling efficiency when sprinting out
of the start gate and absorbing large jump landings. The FLOAT air spring has been designed to add more progression, to push back on the rider during high cornering loads, and help better control bottom-out. Travel is factory set at 100 mm, and is internally adjustable from 80 to 100 mm in 5 mm increments for optimal crown-to-axle height tuning. The chassis has increased stiffness at this travel due to the use of FOX’s longer travel chassis components normally found on the 32 FLOAT, TALAS®, and Vanilla® forks.

mr. graves could win on a clapped out RS Mag21! that’s pricey & no 20mm version? guess i can’t afford to adapt! I’ll keep my pikes.

silly, silly price as per usual fox. nah cheers

Crazy silly price. Why not just get 32’s or similar and get them tuned by Mojo for less than these? And will the average punter benefit from noticeable performance differences? Somehow I doubt it.
But if Graves runs them then watch the NPS 4X series next year be full of them. Rather like Yeti frames really.

they are not any cheaper than normal 32s really, all prices have gone up for 2010 especially forks. My 36 floats cost 700 and are now about 800 if not more

Look sweet but at that cost I’ll be sticking with my Pikes.

Our sport is becoming a retail joke. Its just a fork for gods sake.750 english pounds.@#$%^&*. I would love to see what that 750 pays for ie production costs, factory utility bills, expensive offices, managment luncheons, excessive expenses. Could be a good artical Dirt.

Stu rider, I think you’re onto something there, I’ll have a word with the boss

I was going to get a set of these for the Absolut but £749!! I don’t understand why Fox mark up there prices so much, they could totally dominate the market if they just had reasonably priced products.. oh and a 180mm SC fork!

These look nice, but are way over-priced, have an axle size most people in its intended market don’t use, and should have been 36. To put things in perspective, these are £750? I just bought a set of 2010 Float 36 R’s lowered to 100mm for £600 dead.

i own a 32 f-series rlc 15qr. and they still go for more then that, so stop complaining you get an rlc out of these, with the 15 qr thru axle

Andrew, Ha Ha. You must of been tired posting at 2.32am.
I understand good stuff requires a hefty price tag but it runs a risk of turning people away when they see all this expensive equipment in mags, internet and shop floors. I work at a bike shop and can see the purse strings being kept tight.
But then again most products are over priced. We all see that when we are looking for a sofa, car, washing machine. The bike industry doesnt have to be any different…..does it?.
