I have owned this bike for a year and it really did change the game for me, the only reason that I am looking to sell is because I have been lured away by something carbon with the hope it will be as fun to ride as the Gyro has been but a bit lighter.
The Black Gold Limited Edition was a limited production run launched in 2012 of 50 Medium and 50 Large frames. This is a large frame with a 19” seat tube.
Honestly, I bought this bike blind, without a test ride. I rarely do this but I’d fancied the idea of a 29” trail bike for quite some time and as soon as Orange announced the Gyro I was totally sold. My first ride was a revelation, seriously, I’m a bit of a Strava (mid pack kind of guy!) freak but I kid you not, I set all my PR’s using this bike, be it up over, or down my times came tumbling. I am totally sold on 29” wheels when paired to great geometry and you will be too the first time you get a Gyro on your local trails.
The Gyro makes a fantastic all-rounder, it is just as happy doing quick XC blasts, all day epics, all mountain and light downhill. It would also make a very good UK Enduro bike. Just set it up how you want and enjoy.
There’s something about Orange’s tried and trust single pivots that just simply work and work well. It finds traction where your 26” just wont, it’ll grip harder and the momentum the big wheels hold is simply fantastic.
Please note that YOU WILL BE FASTER ON THIS BIKE THAN YOU ARE ON YOUR 26” (and 27.5” for that matter!) BIKE! No two-ways about it, it’ll blow your mind.
I find the Gyro to be the perfect UK trail bike, I’ve ridden the new Five 29 and found the Gyro to be much the better all rounder.
It’s current spec is as it came from the Orange factory in Halifax, and it weighs about 30lbs with pedals. It rides a lot quicker than the weight suggests and is quite happy to spend long days out in the sticks.
I have been running lots of upgrades during our time together and got it down to 27-28lbs quite easily. For the purposes of this sale I put everything back to standard, so the gears, bars, stem, wheels and brakes have not seen half the action of the bike as a whole.
These are the items that’ll be part of this sale:
I upgraded the headset to a Hope Pick n Mix with a Hope Head Doctor as I find most standard headsets not up to our weather in the UK and I rate Hope as the best for the job.
The front mech has been upgraded to a Shimano XT as it offers the best front shifting.
The Saddle and Post have been replaced and upgraded to Race Face’s ultra strong yet lightweight (and expensive!) Atlas I-Beam.
I swapped out the standard Race Face crank and BB for a Shimano XT, it’s only a few weeks old so it’s in great nick.
Lastly, I was never personally a fan of the Gold Decals that the bike came with so when they started to look a little worse for wear, I had Slik Graphics design me some custom (MX grade) decals in green. I will note though, if you would prefer the standard gold decals I can provide these for £20 in addition to the agreed sale price. Saying that I would be quite willing to have Orange re-powder coat the frame in a colour of your choice from their selection for an additional £200. These are cost prices.
Condition wise, the bike itself is in good condition, it has been ridden and does have cable marks and a few scratched but it has no dings, dents or serious damage. The components are all in excellent condition, the rear tyre part worn and the cranks just have the usual heal wear on them. The forks are in good condition, again with usual riding marks but nothing serious.
The bike has just been serviced ready for sale, that included new Jagwire cables, new brake pads and a good strip and clean of everything.
The shock and fork are Fox Factory Kashima coated so are buttery smooth with no stiction.
Lastly, lets talk about money. This bike cost me £2899 last year, I didn’t get a penny off it at the time of purchase so obviously I am looking to recoup as much as I can seriously expect to after a year of fun and obviously baring in mind the upgrades I made. I am realistic though but I do have a minimum price in mind which I would be prepared to let the bike go for, so please bare this in mind and only offer realistic prices. I will only accept cash on collection as PayPal fees are just astronomical when you are dealing with this kind of value.
Please contact me for any further information as I will be more than happy to talk bikes with you. :)
